Noiseless (remixer) comments :
Audio 1: Silver bootleg "The Real Thing" (edited)
Audio 2: Silver bootleg "Until The End Of The World" (edited)
Well, it took a little more time than I expected, but here it is finally: the well-famous Rotterdam 1992 DVD, with enhanced audio.
Some of you may have read the discussion about what is the best audio source ("The Real Thing" or "Until The End Of The World"); I have to say I really don't know. Both have pros & cons. So, in the end I decided to synchronize both sources and add them both to the DVD. There was enough space because the image wasn't really big, so why not.
THE FUN PART:
This is really an awesome show, lots of energy and apparantly a lot of fun. Bono must have been drunk, or must have had a bad hangover. I believe he falls off the stage twice and his dancing moves are, well, amazing.
During the show there was a soccer game (Russia-Netherlands) which made the crowd very noisy. "What is this strange, ritual chant?" Bono asks after The Fly. He referred to a (typical?) Dutch, rather hideous yell that can be heared from time to time during the show. Bono keeps referring to the game until the last notes of "Love is Blindness".
For all of you that don't speak Dutch: at the end of "Mysterious Ways" Bono sighs: "Het is heet hier", which means "It's hot in here". In the beginning of "With or Without You" (after an uninspired 3 second phone call to an automatic service): "Ik wil met mijn baby spreken", meaning: "I want to speak to my baby".
THE BORING PART:
This DVD is essentially the same as the DVD achtungpop made available in the past. I removed both audio streams (audience and SBD) because the sound was not very good. Because I could not choose between both silvers mentioned above, and because some people strongly prefer TRT, while others have an distinct preference for UTEOTW, I added both. As mentioned above: there was space enough so why not.
They are synchronized and more or less remastered, but I can't say they are 100% perfect.
This is what it looked like:
"The Real Thing" had a gap between "Running To Stand Still" and "Where The Streets Have No Name". Moreover, I personally don't really like the sound because much of the high frequencies is cut: you'll find virtually nothing above 12kHz (!) and you can hear that. Pretty wild and muddy bass with lack of definition. I suspect this silver being pressed from a high generation tape but that's just my personal impression.
"Until The End Of The World" sounds a lot more natural to me, but it suffers from very agressive hiss which was, I think, filtered out by the bootleg company but not good, leaving nasty leftovers. The beginning of "Bad" was damaged and there was a skip in "Angel Of Harlem".
For this DVD, I repaired or patched the gaps. Where needed, I mixed in some audience sound (i.e. intro, before encore, a few seconds between Pride & ISHFWILF, and if I remember well a minute between WGRYWH & TTTYAATW). I also added some audience between other tracks. Some quiet parts of "UTEOTW" I replaced with parts of "TRT" because in these quiet parts the hiss was unbearable. You won't hear the transitions, except for one (in "With or Without You").
The synchronization by the way was like my worst nightmare. Speed on both sources was fluctuating all the time; I had to cut everything in really small parts and synch those one by one. But everything - except for the first 30 seconds of "Zoo Station" maybe - is as perfect now as it can be. It definitely was worth it: to me this is a top-notch show and really enjoyable to watch (and listen). Depending on your preference for TRT or UTEOTW, just choose the appropriate audio stream & play it loud & often!
Thanks a lot for help, advice & enthousiasm: achtungpop, CTu2fan, burningedge, sixer & everyone else.
